What is Microsoft Azure for Students?

Microsoft Azure for Students is a special program designed to give university students hands-on experience with enterprise-grade cloud computing for free. It allows you to build, deploy, and test your own applications without having to worry about unexpected cloud bills, making it the perfect sandbox for your university projects and portfolio building.

The Key Features

• The $100 Credit: You receive $100 in Azure credits to spend on premium cloud resources like databases or virtual machines.

• 65+ Free Services: You get access to over 65 always-free services, including Azure App Service for hosting, Azure Functions for serverless code, and Azure Cosmos DB.

• No Credit Card Required: This is the biggest relief for students. You sign up using only your academic email. (we will discuss about the methods of activating the plan at the middle of this article) If you burn through your $100 credit, your premium services simply pause—you will never be unexpectedly charged.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the program, you must meet the following criteria:

• You must be 18 years of age or older.

• You must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited, degree-granting two-year or four-year educational institution.

• You must be able to verify your academic status using a valid university email address.

Duration & Renewal

• How long does it last? The $100 credit and access to the free tier are valid for 12 months.

• Can it be renewed? Yes! As long as you remain an active, full-time student, you can renew the offer every year.

• How renewal works: Microsoft will prompt you to re-verify your student status 30 days before your 12-month anniversary. Once verified, you receive a fresh $100 credit for the next year (note that unused credits from the previous year do not roll over).

How to activate Azure for Students free subscription to your Microsoft Account

Method 1 – Using official Azure for Students portal

1. Visit the official Microsoft Azure for Students portal from the link given below:

2. Click on the Start free button

3. Then Sign Up to your Microsoft account.

You can sign up using either a personal Microsoft account or your official university Microsoft account. Here is how the process works for both:

• Using a University Microsoft Account: If your school provides a verified Microsoft account linked to your student email, you are in luck! Your Azure for Students subscription will activate automatically as soon as you sign up.

• Using a Personal Microsoft Account: If you don't have a school-issued Microsoft account, no problem. You can sign up with your private email (like a standard Gmail or Outlook account). Microsoft will then ask you to confirm your eligibility by sending a quick verification link to your valid university email address.

How to complete the process by using a Personal Microsoft Account

After you sign up successfully, then you will receive the form below to Verify Your Academic Status.

Fill the details correctly (specially the school email address) and click the button Verify Academic Status at the end of the page.

Then you will see one of the following things:

1. Verification email has been sent to the school email you provided. Please follow the instructions in the email to complete offer activation.

Then check your school/university email address and click on the link sent by: Microsoft Vetting Services

Then click on the Continue button.

Then you can access your Azure for Students plan at the following page:

2. Your email domain is not currently registered with us. You can choose another verification method

This is a common issue faced by most of the non-US students. There is nothing to worry, there is a great way to activate your Azure for Students subscription. I have given details about this in the Method 2. Please note that this is not an issue of yours. So, do not try again and again entering your university email because this can led to temporary block or suspend of your Microsoft Account.

3. You do not have access

This is also a common issue faced by most of the students. You can simply overcome this error by the following steps:

1. Open the Azure for Students page in an incognito window.

2. Do not use your passkeys or biometrics for the sign-up process.

3. Make sure you sign up to your Microsoft Account by using your email and typing your password.

Method 2 – By activating GitHub Student Developer Pack

In this method, we are validating our Azure for Students package through activating GitHub Student Developer Package. For this you need to have an active GitHub account.

Step - 01

Go to https://github.com/login and then log in to your GitHub account or create a GitHub account. Please make sure you use the email address which you want to validate the Azure for Students package. (You can use your private Gmail or Outlook email address)

Step – 02

After you sign in successfully, navigate to the Settings page at https://github.com/settings

Step – 03

Before you proceed with validating your academic status, you have to do 3 important things.

1. Enable Two Factor Authentication to enhance your account protection. After enabling, log out and log back in to GitHub before applying for the Educational Package. Visit:

2. Complete your GitHub billing information with your full name exactly as it appears in your academic affiliation document. You do not have to add a payment method. You may need to log out and log back in to GitHub before applying for the Educational Package. If you have only a single legal name, enter it in both the first and last name fields. Visit:

3. Under the Emails section in the settings, add and verify your school/university email address. Once you add your school/university email address, they will send a validation link or an OTP to your school/university email address to confirm the identity of your email address.

Step – 04

After completing the above two, you have to log out from your account and log back into the GitHub to refresh your session.

Step – 05

Then go to Settings Navigate to Educational Benefits under Billing and Licensing.

Step – 06

Click on the button Start an application Select your school/university email address and update your location. Then click Continue button and select the method you like to proceed with verification. You will be given some options and using your school/university ID is the easiest method to get the application accepted with in few minutes.

During the document uploading please make sure you use your device camera and not uploading any edited or non-edited images. Uploading images of your verification documents with effects, edits or filters may reject your application and you have to reapply the application with genuine images or documents.

Step – 07

After submitting your application, you have to wait for few minutes or hours based on the verification method. After sometime check back your application status and make sure it is marked as Verified. In any case where the application is Rejected, please make sure you complete the necessary instructions given by Team GitHub under the rejected application, before starting the next application.

Step – 08

After successfully verifying your application, you have to wait for 72 hours (3 days) until the GitHub Educational Offers become available for you.

Step – 09

Once the GitHub Educational Package is activated to your account (after the 72 hours) you can start the activation of your Azure for Students subscription.

Step – 10

Visit 👉 https://azure.microsoft.com/free/students?wt.mc_id=studentamb_644874 and click Start free button.

Step – 11

When you are prompted to Sign In, make sure you use the option Sign in with GitHub. Then, complete the Sign In process with your GitHub credentials and if prompted asking for any permissions, grant the permission for Microsoft Azure. And also, for activating the subscription to your personal email address, select Personal Account if there is any prompt asking about your account type.

Step – 12

After providing all the permission required, your Azure for Students package is officially activated to your personal email address. You can check it by the following link:

If you get an error saying your GitHub account doesn't have student benefits enabled

Even if your Student Developer Pack is verified, this error can still pop up. The best way to fix it is to open a ticket with GitHub Education Support and choose "I am a verified student having trouble redeeming my Global Campus offers." They are pretty fast and usually sort it out in a few hours. Visit:

If both paths fail: Open a Support Ticket

Sometimes the automated Azure for Students verification fails, especially if your school doesn't provide an institutional email or if document upload isn't available in your region. • Student ID Card: Clear photo or scan showing your name and the current academic year.

• Enrollment Proof: An official letter or certificate from your registrar showing your full name, school name, and current enrollment dates.

• Error Evidence: A screenshot of the exact error or rejection message from the self-service flow.

• GitHub Proof (Optional): A screenshot confirming your approved status if you have the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

Choose the method below that matches your current access level:

• If you have an Azure Account:

1. Log in to portal.azure.com.

2. Click Help + Support (top right corner).

3. Create a new support request.

4. Select Subscription Management ➡️ Account ➡️ Azure for Students verification.

5. Attach your documents and explain that your school does not provide student emails.

• If you cannot access the portal: Use the Azure for Education Contact Form directly.

• Public Escalation Alternative: Post your situation on the Microsoft Q&A Forum. Microsoft moderators actively monitor this tag and can escalate stuck cases internally.
